Picasso's $139 million painting is the most expensive art of the year


Sotheby's sold in New York on November 8 for more than $139 million (HK $1.08 billion), becoming the most expensive artwork in the global auction this year.

The painting, called Femme a la montre, A Woman with a Watch (translated), was created in 1932 by an anonymous buyer."The Woman with a Watch" is a portrait of Picasso's lover Mary Dresa water (Marie-Therese Walter) sitting on a throne-like chair against a blue background. According to Sotheby's, the painting was purchased by the late philanthropist Lando (Emily Fisher Landau) from the Pace Gallery (Pace Gallery) in New York in 1968 and kept in a Manhattan apartment.

In 1927, at the age of 17, Walter met Picasso at the age of 47. Picasso developed a secret relationship with Walter, with whom he had a daughter.
