Reshaping Van Gogh's Creative Path: Tokyo SOMPO Art Museum Still Life Special Exhibition Unveils Next Week

Van Gogh loves to paint flowers, and a series of sunflower paintings are world-renowned, including one collected by the SOMPO Art Museum in Tokyo. In 1987, the predecessor of SOMPO Group, Anda Fire Insurance, purchased this painting "Sunflowers" for over US $39.9 million, becoming the most expensive artwork at auction at that time.

The SOMPO Art Museum in Tokyo will hold a special exhibition on "Van Gogh and Still Lives: From Tradition to Innovation" starting from next Tuesday (October 17th). In addition to this museum treasure, there will also be 25 Van Gogh still lifes and 44 European still lifes from the 17th to early 20th centuries, exploring how Van Gogh's painting style was influenced by previous artists and his inspiration for future artists.

The extension will end on January 24th next year. If readers are in Tokyo during this period or are interested in traveling to Tokyo, they may wish to include this Van Gogh exhibition in their itinerary.

Still life originated in the Netherlands in the 17th century and established itself as an independent field in the history of painting. Artists use flowers, food, and even hourglasses and skulls to symbolize the fleeting passing of life. With the passage of time, still life painting infused more new elements with the emergence of Impressionism in the 19th century. Famous works such as "Sunflowers" and "Iris" are still life masterpieces created by Van Gogh.

This time, the exhibition "Van Gogh and Still Life: From Tradition to Innovation" focuses on Van Gogh's still life paintings to see how his creations were influenced by 17th century Dutch still life paintings and how his works influenced later painters.

Van Gogh only began painting at the age of about 27, and his artistic career lasted only ten years. He painted a total of about 850 oil paintings, of which about 170 were still lifes. This exhibition brings still life paintings from Van Gogh's early to late years to see how his works have transformed.
